What is wrong with Bsnl 3G And HTC Legend Battery Life

My HTC Legend usually used to give a battery backup of more than a day,  on Zain network @ Kuwait.

This vacation as I was in Kerala, activated BSNL 3G and then I started facing the weird issue. Battery was draining out like anything, like if i had a Full battery @ 10 PM night, by morning the battery will be totally drained to 10% (Note that the phone is just in IDLE mode whole night).

So my initial thought was that some thing is wrong with the battery and should be replaced with a new one. So searched for a HTC service Center and found one @ Pattom , Trivandrum.

The moment I told the issue to the Techincal guy, He just asked me “Are you on BSNL” , and i said “Yes”, and he concluded “just change to some other network and it will be fine”.

He said lots of people are coming complaining with the same issue(eg HTC wildfire users). And so i did the same and Yes the battery was working fine .

So the verdict, Some thing is wrong with BSNL 3G network or HTC

Few days back I came across this article http://gizmodo.com/5740076/giz-explains-why-your-call-dropped , and it was wriiten that

“On just about any 3G network, carriers transmit voice signals with CDMA, or code division multiple access. (Yep, this includes HSPA 3G, which is often referred to as GSM.) What this means is that multiple phones can transmit over the same radio frequencies, and their signals are differentiated by code. (Disclaimer: this is a brutal simplification.) As one network engineer told me, sharing a cell tower is like sharing a room with a bunch of people that speak different languages. Different people can hold concurrent conversations, but everyone can understand what they need to—their brains block out the rest of the conversations, because to them, it’s all just gibberish anyway.

Just like in this shared room, though, as a tower gets more crowded, the volume starts to rise. The more everyone speaks, the louder one has to talk to be understood. Likewise, the more people that are using a cell tower, the more power each phone needs to be “heard” by the tower. This actually results in a contraction of the cell’s coverage area. “

So it should be the BSNL 3G network which is eating the battery as there are one or two tower which is 3G enabled in a  district,   HELL who knows.

BTW am back on Zain network and battery life is back as usuall

Do Not Call / Do Not Disturb

Not Call Registry (NDNC Registry)

Its usual that when we  are real busy working we  get calls or SMS from the Tele-marketers advertising there services or products.  Its real frustrating when you try answering  that unknown numbers and it start playing a song or says somthing, real waste of time.  From my experience Vodafone is the worst operator that does it. Its just ” spamming”.

How to Stop it !!

Yes we can stop it.
Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has set some rules and regulation for this kind of spamming. It is called National Do Not Call Registry (NDNC Registry)

What is NDNC Registry?

The primary objective of the National Do Not Call Registry (NDNC Registry) is to curb Unsolicited Commercial Communication (UCC). UCC has been defined as “any message, through telecommunications service, which is transmitted for the purpose of informing about,or soliciting or promoting any commercial transaction in relation to goods, investments or services which a subscriber opts not to receive, but, does not include —-

  • any message (other than promotional message) relating to a service or financial transaction under a specific contract between the parties to such contract;or
  • any messages relating to charities, national campaigns or natural calamities transmitted on the directions of the Government or agencies authorized by it for the said purpose;
  • messages transmitted, on the directions of the Government or any authority or agency authorized by it, in the interest of the sovereignty and integrity of India, the security of the State, friendly relations with foreign States, public order, decency or morality.”

The NDNC Registry will be a data base having the list of all telephone numbers of the subscribers who do not want to receive UCC.After the establishment of NDNC registry, Telephone subscriber (Landline or mobile) who does not wish to receive UCC, can register their telephone number with their telecom service provider for inclusion in the NDNC. Telecom Service Provider shall upload the telephone number to the NDNC within 45 days of receipt. The Telemarketer will have to verify their calling telephone numbers list with the NDNC registry before making a call. To discourage the telemarketers who make calls to the numbers registered in Do Not Call List, a provision has been made whereby Rs.500/ – shall be payable by the telemarketer to the service provider for every first unsolicited commercial communication (UCC) and Rs.1000/- shall be payable for subsequent UCC. There is a provision for disconnection of the telemarketer telephone number / telecom resource if the UCC is sent even after levy of Rs.500/- & Rs.1000/- tariff. In case of non-compliance to the Telecom Unsolicited Commercial Communications Regulations, 2007, the Service Provider is also liable to pay an amount by way of financial disincentive, not exceeding Rs.5000/- for first non-compliance of the regulation and in case of second or subsequent such non-compliance, an amount not exceeding Rs.20,000/- for each such non-compliance.

So how to activate it !!!

For customers who would like to register/de-register their request for NDNC registry may dial 1909 or SMS to 1909 with keywords ‘START DND’ for registration and ‘STOP DND’ for de-registration

Vodafone users : When i had a talk with Vodafone customer care he told me to SMS to 53733 with keyword ‘DNC ACT’
